30 Days of Praying through 1 & 2 Chronicles: Day 13 – Wisdom

2 Chronicles 1:7-10

That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon answered God, “You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me king in his place. Now, Lord God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth. Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

What would your answer be if God asked you the same question? If I’m really honest with myself, I would probably ask for a skinny body or a house right on the beach. Solomon could have asked for wealth, power, or honor but he asked God for wisdom.

Wisdom is a theme throughout all of Scripture. My pastor likes to term the word wisdom as, “the right use of knowledge.” It’s knowing what to do and acting on it. It’s using good judgment and turning away from foolishness. Here are some examples of wisdom in the Scriptures:

  • Proverbs 9:10 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
  • Proverbs 2:6 – For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
  • Proverbs 2:10 – For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
  • Ecclesiastes 2:13 – I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness.
  • 1 Corinthians 1:30 – It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

Wisdom is so important to God because he wants us to live differently from the world. God is ready and willing to give us this wisdom. How do we get it? James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Wisdom does not come naturally. It comes when we ask our generous God just like Solomon did. It’s his wisdom we need to get through each day. To increase in knowledge, we must constantly be in God’s Word. Then when the time comes for wisdom, we apply the knowledge effectively. Let’s be like Solomon today and ask God to give us his wisdom in every situation.

Father, the Bible says that the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom. How much greater then is your wisdom! We are so often foolish in our decisions and actions and it can cause unnecessary strife in our lives. We ask that you will give us a generous amount of your wisdom. Help us to use this wisdom so that we can be a light to a foolish world. We commit ourselves to your Word and your way. Amen.
